French Nat’l Found Dead

A 27-year-old French national was found dead Sunday morning in Phnom Penh from a drug overdose, a commune police chief said.

Fabrice Saint Ghistaine was found dead in his room at a small guest house near the city’s Boeung Kak lake, Chhay Thirith, Srah Chak commune police chief, said Tuesday. A spokesman for the French Embassy confirmed a French national died but declined to comment.

An autopsy conducted at the Calmette Hospital found that Saint Ghistaine died from injecting drugs Saturday night, said Chhay Thirith, adding that drug use is common in the lake area among foreign budget travelers.

However, guest house owners denied Tuesday the area is a center for drugs. “If they say there are a lot of drugs they should find the evidence,” said Long Sokhaeng, owner of the No 9 Guest House.
