Peng Pat, a CPP senator and ruling party stalwart who held the rank of four-star general in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, died early Wednesday morning at his home in Phnom Penh, according to his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An.
He was 66.
Ms. Sam An said only that her husband died of an illness.
Peng Pat served in the Kampuchean People’s Revolutionary Armed Forces following the overthrow of the Khmer Rouge and went to work at the Agriculture Ministry under the socialist government in the 1980s, Ms. Sam An said Wednesday afternoon during a funeral at the family’s villa in Chamkar Mon district.
Various government ministers and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
The senator had two sons and four grandchildren, she added.
“Now they lost their grandfather. I am so sorry,” Ms. Sam An said.
A cremation ceremony will be held on Saturday at Wat Botum pagoda in Phnom Penh, she said.
Ms. Sam An is the minister of National Assembly-Senate relations and inspection, as well as a senior member of the CPP’s powerful standing committee.
