Takeo province police have taken four relatives into custody for the machete slaying of a 47-year-old French-Cambodian man visiting his family.
Authorities were preparing evidence to try Srey Laline, Srey Samnang, Kuch Phala and Chhe Sros for the Nov 13 killing of Ouk Kim Doeun, Takeo Police Commissioner Nou Sangwa said.
Srey Laline took a machete and hacked to death Ouk Kim Doeun, who was Srey Laline’s uncle, after planning to do so with his brother Srey Samnang, Kuch Phala, the dead man’s wife, and his brother-in-law Chhe Sros, Nou Sangwa said.
Srey Laline, 22, was in love with his aunt, and jealous of his uncle, who had just returned from France two days before the killing, Nou Sangwa said. Ouk Kim Doeun, a French-Cambodian dual citizen who had lived in and worked in France since 1985, returned to Cambodia recently because Kuch Phala had prom-ised to join him in France, but had not, Nou Sangwa said.
The group had gone to Kep town in Kampot province for a holiday with seven other relatives and friends, Nou Sangwa said.
They stopped at a Tram Kok district house, but Ouk Kim Doeun wanted to continue to their home in Kompong Speu province. He asked his wife to go with him, and waited for her while she used the bathroom, Nou Sangwa said.
Srey Laline crept up behind his uncle.
He swung once with a machete, striking Ouk Kim Doeun in the back of the neck, Nou Sangwa said.
Ouk Kim Doeun cried out, “Help! Help!” and Srey Laline slashed his throat, crushing his larynx, Nou Sangwa said. Srey Laline swung a last time, nearly decapitating his uncle, according to Nou Sangwa.
The four suspects got into a rented truck and drove off, Nou Sangwa said.
A military police officer who lived in the neighborhood heard the screams and called provincial police, Nou Sangwa said.
Authorities found Ouk Kim Doeun’s body near the ladder of a nearby home, about 20 meters from where his nephew killed him, Nou Sangwa said.
Kuch Phala’s sister, who was traveling with the group and witnessed the killing, reported it to police, and authorities arrested the four suspects, Nou Sangwa said. Srey Laline has since confessed to the slaying, according to Nou Sangwa.
All four suspects remained in a Takeo province prison, Nou Sangwa said.
