Four Maids Return After Fleeing Bosses in Malaysia

Four male maids will return to Cambodia today after escaping from their employers and seeking assistance from the Cambodian Embassy in Malaysia, where they say they were forced to work overtime and were not paid, an official said Monday.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, Neang Mina, 20; Moeng Kongkea, 16; Heng Theara, 20; and Chhai Rachhan, 17, arrived in Malaysia illegally in February 2015 via a broker. They fled their employers in Perak state and arrived at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur on August 19, the statement said.

Chum Sounry, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said he had no details about the four maids other than that they had requested help from Princess Norodom Arunrasmy, Cambodia’s ambassador to Malaysia.

“They came to the Cambodian ambassador asking for help as they were working overtime and did not get any salary,” Mr. Sounry said.

“The ministry has appealed to all laborers to be careful and not to seek illegal work through brokers,” he added.
