Four Injured by Cooking Oil From Street Fight

Two tuk-tuk drivers were arrested in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kok district on Thursday afternoon after one of them attempted to throw scalding cooking oil on the other, but missed and hit four pedestrians instead, police said on Friday.

Chan Soeun and Sam Manin, both 32, began fighting outside the Phsar Depot market in Phsar Depot 1 commune after Mr. Manin accused Mr. Soeun of hitting him in the head with an empty plastic cup, according to commune police chief Sdoeung Sarith.

“The two tuk-tuk drivers fought each other and then the suspect, Chan Soeun, took cooking oil on the street and wanted to throw it at Manin, but he dodged and it hit four people walking near the market,” he said.

Mr. Sarith said the four victims were immediately sent to a health clinic in Tuol Kok and that two were seriously injured. Within an hour of receiving the victims’ complaints, the tuk-tuk drivers were arrested, he said.

“They are detained at the district [police] station…. Both have to be responsible because it started from them,” he said.
