Four Get 25 Years Over Deadly Robbery Attempt

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday sentenced four men to 25 years in prison for their role in an attempted motorbike robbery that turned fatal in April last year.

The four were arrested in June 2014, more than a month after they shot and killed the owner of a motorbike during an attempted robbery near the Grilled Meat Village restaurant in Chamkar Mon district.

“The court has decided to sentence Sothea Daro, 21; Pet Samnang, 22; Hiev Chamroeun, 18; and Sothea Davit, 18, to 25 years in prison each on charges of theft with aggravating circumstances causing the death of the victim, and illegal possession of a weapon,” Presiding Judge Khy Chhay announced Monday.

During their trial last month, the court noted that all four men had also been convicted for three previous robberies in which they had admitted guilt, and were sentenced to 18 years in prison for those crimes while in detention following their June 2014 arrests.

The four denied their role in the latest robbery.
