Four Arrested Over Attempted Armed Robbery of Pharmacy

Four people were arrested over the weekend for shooting the owner of a pharmacy and his son during an attempted robbery in Svay Rieng province, officials said on Sunday. The first arrest came almost immediately after the failed robbery, as a suspect attempted to flee with a motodop who turned out to be an off-duty military police officer.

So Pho, a clerk in Svay Rieng City’s Svay Rieng commune, where the robbery occurred, said that at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, four men in a black Toyota Camry pulled up outside the Chhuor Somaly Pharmacy.

“Four men arrived in the car and parked in front of the pharmacy and one got out to pretend to buy some medicine,” Mr. Pho said. “A few minutes later, two other men came out and one man had a handgun that he pointed at the pharmacy owner to demand money.”

The pharmacy owner, Chhuor Somaly, tried to push the gun away and was grazed by a bullet on his right shoulder, he said, adding that the gunman also shot the owner’s 5-year-old son, Chhuor Malyvathnak, in the right foot.

“The pharmacy owner tried to fight back and yelled for help, so the suspect shot at him but was not on target,” he said, adding that Mr. Somaly’s shouting caused the would-be robbers to flee.

Khim Lai, chief of the provincial police’s serious crimes bureau, said that Sam Siny, 31, was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. when an off-duty military police officer picked him up and drove him directly to the district military police station.

“After fighting with the pharmacy owner, he feld on a moto taxi, but he was unlucky because the moto taxi driver was a plainclothes police officer who took him into the district military police station,” he said.

Two of the other suspects ran away on foot while one drove away in the Camry, according to Mr. Lai. He said that at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, police and military police surrounded a building in Bavet City and arrested the other three suspects, who were hiding inside.

“We learned from the first suspect the location and went to surround the building and arrest the suspects for questioning,” he said.
