Former Police Officer Killed in Phnom Penh

A former police officer and motorbike taxi driver was robbed and killed with an ax on Tuesday night near Ly Yong Phat Bridge in Kandal province’s Mok Kampoul district, a police official said Wednesday.

“This morning we got a report from a villager that a man had been killed,” deputy commune police chief Sok Pheaden said.

“After we reached the scene, we found that the head of the victim had been chopped with an ax.” According to Mr. Pheaden, Loeung Cheang Ly was working as a motorbike taxi driver on Tuesday evening when he picked up two men on National Road 6 in Prek Liep commune.

The two asked to be dropped near Ly Yong Phat Bridge in Prek Tasek commune in Phnom Penh, where another suspect came up behind Loeung Cheang Ly and attacked him with an ax, Mr. Pheaden said.

Police found the body about 300 meters from the bridge early Wednesday morning.

Mr. Pheaden said that Loeung Cheang Ly was the victim of a planned robbery as his motorbike was missing from the scene. Police have yet to identify any suspects.
