For Sale: Web Domain in Retired King’s Name

The Internet domain name norodomsihanouk.com is up for sale for a proposed $990, according to a message posted on the domain and viewed Monday.

“The owners of the domain name norodomsihanouk.com are accepting offers from interested parties willing to obtain ownership rights over the domain name,” the message reads. “This is a good faith offer.”

Buyers interested in the domain bearing the name of retired King Norodom Sihanouk are invited to fill a form included on the Web site.

The message gives the figure of $990 as an indication on the price.

The owners are not identified, but a message on intellectual property issues reads: “The owner of this domain name also registers other domain names daily, in a manner of mass production.”

It was unclear Monday when and if the retired King has previously used norodomsihanouk.com, and when the domain name was established.

Norodom Sihanouk uses norodomsihanouk.info to broadcast his views on current affairs; while at norodomsihanouk.org, music clips and information on his movies can be found under the heading: “This is a site dedicated to a very talented man who happens to be King.”

Prince Sisowath Thomico, a personal adviser to the retired King, did not immediately respond to e-mail queries about norodomsihanouk.com on Monday.

Asked whether someone other than the retired King would be allowed to post messages on a domain in his name, government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said a law is being drafted on cyber-crime, but referred further questions to the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

So Khun, minister of Post and Telecommunications, declined comment on the issue.

Two sources at the Royal Palace said they were unaware of the domain name being for sale.
