Food Poisoning Cases in Kandal Traced to Wholesaler

More than 200 villagers from five communes in Kandal province’s Kandal Stung district fell ill with severe food poisoning on Sunday after eating noodles from a wholesaler in Ampov Prey commune, a local official said Monday.

The 218 that fell ill were largely factory workers and their families, who had been eating noodles to relax on their day off, according to district police chief Mem Chanrith.

Shortly after consuming the tainted noodles, they were stricken with stomachaches, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness.

“One shop is providing noodles to retailers in the five communes, and the villagers bought noodles from the retailers to eat,” he said.

Most of those who fell ill are recovering after receiving treatment at local health centers in the province, while a few in more serious condition were also sent to hospitals in Phnom Penh to be put on saline drips and have not yet been released.

Mr. Chanrith said he had dropped by the noodle shop, which does not have a name, after receiving reports of the poisoning.

“According to my view of the shop, the place is not sanitary: It has a bad smell and is full of ducks and chickens,” he said, adding that local health officials are investigating the cause of the outbreak along with the Ministry of Health.
