Floods Kill 1, Affect Thousands in Provinces

Flooding in Kompong Speu and Kandal provinces has killed one man and devastated thousands, but officials were hoping the waters were receding as the rainy season comes to a close.

More than 20,000 people have evacuated to pagodas and high ground from the two Kompong Speu districts worst hit by flooding, Samraong Tang and Chbar Mon, provincial military police chief Mem Siborn said. The floods have destroyed thousands of hectares of rice in those districts and killed a 34-year-old man, he said.

The floods have rendered a strip of National Route 2 impassable, submerged two meters under the murky water, Kandal Stung district police chief Em Sam Ath said.

In Kandal Stung district, 67 villages have been overwhelmed, sending 2,907 families looking for shelter in a pagoda near National Route 2, Kandal Stung Governor Bo Nareth said.

The water levels have reach the same height as this time last year, Ministry of Water Resources official Nay Lon said. He said he was optimistic the floodwaters would “recede, step-by-step,” thus avoiding the widespread damage done by last year’s record-setting floods.

“We have many arms of the river flowing back into the Bassac river. It is all receding on time, and our villagers’ rice is growing well,” Nay Lon said.
