Five Charged After Sihanoukville Restaurant Fight

The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court on Tuesday charged three Italian men and two Cambodians with intentional violence following their arrests over a brawl at a Sihanoukville restaurant on Sunday, a court official said.

Deputy prosecutor Ros Saram said Investigating Judge Sok Soeun charged two of the Italians—Matteo Moratella, 36, and Fabrizio Alvoni, 46—with intentional violence, and the third—Andrea Gatto, 32—with intentional violence with aggravating circumstances.

“We charged [Mr. Gatto] with intentional violence with aggravating circumstances because he had a knife during the fight,” Mr. Saram said.

He added that Dy Sovichet, 26, and Det Don, 24, who he said worked at the Moon Shack I Restaurant, were also charged with intentional violence for fighting with the Italians over an allegedly stolen wallet.

During questioning, both sides asked that complaints against the other be dropped.

But the court rejected the requests, Mr. Saram said.

“We cannot accept their compromise, because in the past, foreigners have caused insecurity in Preah Sihanouk province,” he said.

Deputy provincial military police commander Keo Sophal said the five were sent to the provincial prison Tuesday afternoon.
