First Modern Cinema to Open in Siem Reap

Siem Reap City’s first modern movie theater, the $2-million Platinum Cineplex, is set to open Friday in the tourist hub’s Svay Dangkum commune, company officials said Thursday.

The three-screen theater will show five or six films a day, in both 2D and 3D formats, and cater largely to locals, said Sao Sokny, managing partner of MVPC Entertainment, a joint venture between Cambodia’s Cineplex Investment Group and Indonesia-based entertainment company MVP.

MVPC already operates one theater in Cambodia, Platinum Cineplex at the Sorya Shopping Center in Phnom Penh.

“The large population, and income level of the local people who earn from tourism…are factors that led us to invest our money to set up a modern cinema of international standards there,” Mr. Sokny said.

Culture Minister Phoeung Sackona said she was excited about the new theater because it presented yet another venue for screening movies produced by Cambodian filmmakers.

“The cinema will be a place to show both foreign and domestic movies,” she said, adding that she would still like to see local filmmakers receive a larger cut of revenue from ticket sales.

She said Cambodian filmmakers currently receive a 60 percent share.
