Finance Commission to Discuss 2015 Budget

The National Assembly’s mixed-party commission on finance will meet Monday to begin discussing the 2015 draft budget, its deputy chairman said Sunday.

CNRP chief whip Son Chhay said the CPP-chaired committee would meet this morning to discuss the $3.8 billion budget and plan a meeting with Finance Minister Aun Porn Moniroth.

“We will look at some articles the government has created and request justification for adjustments in spending between 2014 and 2015,” Mr. Chhay said.

Mr. Chhay explained that his most pressing concern was to get more details on spending and revenue in the budget. Only broad ministerial-level figures have been released so far.

Mr. Chhay said he had last week written to Mr. Porn Moniroth requesting such details but that the letter had been returned by the Finance Ministry.

“They said because I put my title as ‘deputy chair [of the commission],’ I have to get approval from [CPP commission chairman] Cheam Yeap, so now I have deleted my title from it and I will send the letter again tomorrow and wait to see what their next problem is,” he said. Mr. Yeap could not be reached.
