Father Accused of Poisoning, Strangling Sons

A Kandal province father was charged on May 22 with poisoning then strangling his two young sons to death after his wife left him, police said.

Sroan Samnang, 30, a farmer, is accused of feeding crab cakes laced with rat poison to his 3-year-old and 7-month-old sons on Tuesday evening near his home in Por Tonle village in Koh Thom district, Soeuk Srun, district penal police chief, said Friday

When the poisoned food made the children very sick but did not kill them, Sroan Samnang strangled them to death in a rice field, Soeuk Srun said.

“It is the most horrible crime,” he said. “I’ve never seen this before in my life.”

The suspect attempted to kill himself with the rat poison, but villagers discovered the children dead and Sroan Samnang foaming at the mouth, he said. Villagers brought him to the district hospital where his stomach was pumped, Soeuk Srun said, adding that Sroan Samnang was arrested at the hospital on Wednesday and sent to Kandal Provincial Court on Thursday.

The father has admitted to planning the murder of his children after his wife left home because of an ongoing family dispute, Soeuk Srun said.

Though his mother took the seven-month-old child to his grandparents’ house, the father took the infant back to kill him, the police chief said.
