The bodies of three young sisters who apparently drowned in an irrigation canal in Takeo province’s Samraong district on Monday afternoon were discovered by their father that evening, police said Tuesday.
Sorn Reaksa, 11, and her sisters Sorn Lynda, 7, and Sorn Mary, 5, had tagged along with their father, Neou Thea, when he went to work in a field near their home at about 2:30 p.m., according to district police chief Moeung Sarun.
A short time later, Mr. Thea’s daughters set off for their house without their father, who returned home at 6 p.m. and discovered that they were not there.
“[He] went back to the canal in Samraong village that they had crossed to get to his farm, and at 6:45 p.m., he found the bodies of his children floating in the water,” Mr. Sarun said.
“The kids walked a new way, but the canal is deep. They drowned because their father was careless and allowed his children” to walk home alone, he added.
