Factory Fire Leaves Chinese Supervisor Dead

A fire at the Chang Sheng Garment factory in Phnom Penh’s Pur Senchey district early Monday morning has left one person dead and three others injured, according to Neth Vantha, director of the municipal fire department.

“One Chinese man named Yang Shi Xiong is dead. He was found burned in front of the bathroom. He may have run from his room to the bathroom and then ran out again and fell in front of the bathroom,” Mr. Vantha said, adding that the deceased was a supervisor at the factory.

Mr. Vantha said the three other people suffered only minor injuries.

Security guards at the factory said the fire started at about 4:30 a.m. when people witnessed smoke rising from the building and that it took fire trucks about an hour to arrive.

The Chang Sheng factory, which was completely gutted by the fire, has about 920 employees, according to the website of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia.
