The director of a locally run, Swiss-owned graphic design company was stripped of his managerial duties on Thursday following a clash with his employees this week that saw his gun confiscated by police.
Miroslav Slanina, the Swiss owner of True Time Asia Phnom Penh, flew into Phnom Penh to resolve a dispute between his workers and director Nhem Sopheak over changes to their salaries and leave time.
Both sides have pointed fingers over a physical confrontation on Tuesday that ended with Mr. Sopheak, who claims to work for the Ministry of Interior, having his gun confiscated by commune police.
Mr. Slanina confirmed that he removed Mr. Sopheak, who was both the local manager and director, from his managerial role. Mr. Sopheak will remain the director. “This is a secret issue of the company.
I won’t discuss internal affairs,” Mr. Slanina said. Phan Dany, a designer with the company, said workers became upset when Mr. Sopheak reduced their days off and altered their salaries on July 1, lowering their overtime pay from triple-time to double.
Mr. Slanina restored both the workers’ days off and overtime pay, Mr. Dany said.
