Escaped Prisoners Evade Capture, Head West

Two escaped convicts continued to evade capture Thursday after fleeing Wednesday from the prison construction site where they were being made to work in Kampot province, police said.

More than 30 officers were dispatched Thursday to comb the area in Toek Chhou district and apprehend Sor Mok, 32, and Toan Chrean, 39, who ran into the woods near the foot of Bokor Mountain after telling guards separately that they were going to defecate and fetch firewood.

The prisoners have since removed their prison uniforms, deputy provincial prison director Nget Sok said, and are making tracks westward.

“Two kids who live near the mountain told us that they saw two people walking down from the mountain [Thursday] morning, and the police saw the prison shirts near Kdat bridge,” Mr. Sok said, adding that the men are believed to be heading toward Preah Sihanouk province.

If captured, the pair will face an additional three years each behind bars, which would be tacked onto their relatively short jail terms for causing injury in a fight and stealing a cow, Ek Chheng Huot said Thursday.
