A private English tutor in Battambang province was jailed on charges of aggravated sexual assault on Friday after he confessed earlier in the week to molesting multiple female students as young as 6, a police official said.
Yos Sophany, 50, who police say tutored about 50 boys and girls at his home in Sampov Loun district, was arrested on Tuesday shortly after he arrived at the home of an 8-year-old student to pick her up for class.
According to deputy district police chief Ly Rom, the child refused to leave with Mr. Sophany, telling her parents that she feared he would “touch her” again. The girls’ parents then made him wait at their home until police arrived.
At the district police station, the tutor confessed to molesting all of his female students over the past month, but did not specify how many.
He was questioned at the Battambang Provincial Court on Thursday and yesterday morning charged with indecent assault with aggravating circumstances, said Born Vannara, chief of the provincial police’s anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection bureau.
“The court finished its questioning and charged the suspect,” the bureau chief said, adding Mr. Sophany had since been sent to the provincial prison to await trial.
