Electrical Accident Kills Fish Farm Workers

A freak electrical accident has killed two fish farm workers in Russei Keo district.

A rain storm Tuesday knocked down a lamp pole, which fell onto a wire fence that surrounds a 40 meter by 25 meter pond used by businessman Phat Seng to commercially raise fish, said district deputy penal police chief El Rany.

The pole electrified the fence, which in turn electrified the pond through a wire that led from the fence into the pond, El Rany said.

Either Men Sarin or Dy Sophearith was killed first when he ventured into the pond at about 8:40 pm Tuesday to begin his usual work of collecting fish in a net.

The first man was shocked as he made contact with the water and collapsed.

The second man was also shocked when he rushed into the pond to help his co-worker, and later died at a medical clinic. Both men were from Prey Veng province.

A third co-worker who was standing near the pond was slightly shocked when he touched the electrified fence, El Rany said.

Phat Seng was detained by police for four hours Wednesday before being released after negotiating with family members of the victims, El Rany said. Phat Seng is also a relative of both of the victims, El Rany said.

According to police, the families understood that the deaths were accidental. Phat Seng paid for the funerals of the two men and the families agreed to accept more than $500 for each victim as compensation, El Rany said.
