Duo Busted With Meth Stash in Phnom Penh

In a late-afternoon raid on an apartment in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kok district Wednesday, anti-drug police arrested a man and a woman with more than a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine in their possession, a police official said.

Iv Thearith, deputy chief of the city’s anti-drug police who led the operation, said officers also confiscated a handgun, $50,000 in U.S. currency and 170 million riel (about $42,500) at the apartment, as well as two cars parked outside—a Toyota Camry and a Lexus RX 330—belonging to the suspects.

“Our anti-drug police spent half a year investigating the suspects before we arrested them today,” he said.

Mr. Thearith declined to name the suspects, but said both individuals were about 30 years old and that the man worked as a bodyguard, though he did not know the employer’s name.

As of Wednesday evening, police were still searching the apartment for more evidence, and had come to believe that another stash of drugs was destroyed before authorities arrived, he added.
