Drug Confiscations, Arrests Up on Last Year, Official Says

The Interior Ministry’s anti-drug trafficking department announced on Friday that it has confiscated more than 87 kg of hard drugs and 1.5 tons of marijuana in the first nine months of the year, a sharp increase compared to the same period last year.

Khieu Saman, the department’s director, said police seized 37 kg of narcotics including methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine in the first nine months of 2014.

This year, he said police also arrested more than 3,000 suspects in 1,668 drug cases, compared to roughly 500 cases last year.

“If we compare the figure of drugs confiscated for the first nine months between this year and last year, it has increased a lot,” he said.

“We have good cooperation on the borders of neighboring countries to prevent drug crimes.”

The latest figures were discussed during a meeting on Friday at the National Police Commissariat headquarters in Phnom Penh, led by Deputy National Police Commissioner Mok Chito.

Lieutenant General Chito could not be reached for comment.
