Driver Flees Scene After Speeding Truck Kills Three

Three people were killed and two others seriously injured on Sunday when a truck hauling a load of rocks plowed into three motorbikes on National Road 4 in Kompong Speu province, officials said Monday.

The accident occurred at about 9 a.m. when the truck first collided with a motorbike in Samraong Tong district, seriously injuring its driver, Nhean Ly, 24, said district police chief Khut Sophal.

“The truck was speeding and too heavy to stop and drove on for about 30 meters before crashing into another bike,” he said.

Witnesses told police that the truck jumped the curb in front of Prey Phdao market hitting another motorbike, seriously injuring its driver, Ry Sopheap, 26, and hitting Chuop Buo, 54, and Oeng Spheak, 67, who both died of their injuries.

The truck driver continued on for another 10 meters, hitting and seriously injuring Nget Vann, 24, before finally abandoning the vehicle and fleeing.

Deputy provincial police chief Meach Samoeun said the three wounded victims were brought to a private clinic in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district.

“Two people died at the scene but [Sunday] afternoon, another victim [Nget Vann] was reported to have died at the hospital,” he said.
