Developer’s Son Sent to Maximum-Security Prison

The son of a wealthy developer who was charged last week with assaulting the son of timber magnate Try Pheap in Phnom Penh was transferred on Tuesday from the minimum-security PJ prison to the maximum-security Prey Sar, officials said Wednesday.

“Our prison guards transferred him [Tuesday] afternoon,” said PJ prison director Thann Saveoun, referring further questions to officials at Prey Sar, who could not be reached for comment.

Duong Udomchorvin, 27, the son of Duong Ngieb, was arrested by military police on April 16 after repeatedly slapping Try Daluch, 21, in a tattoo parlor. According to police, Mr. Udomchorvin became offended when he learned that Mr. Daluch did not know who he was.

“I’ll shoot him because he doesn’t know me,” Mr. Udomchorvin reportedly said, instructing his bodyguards to retrieve a gun from his Cadillac SUV after the attack.

Kol Bun, the deputy prosecutor at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court who laid the charges against Mr. Udomchorvin, declined to comment on Mr. Udomchorvin’s transfer, referring questions to Investigating Judge Heng Kesaro, who said he was not working on the case.

In 2013, Mr. Udomchorvin spent six months in PJ for pistol-whipping a man at a restaurant in Phnom Penh.
