The government is planning to create two new departments within the Ministry of Interior that will be charged with handling immigration issues and the provision of identity documents, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
National Police spokesman Kirth Chantharith said that official approval has been granted for the creation of a new general department of migration and general department of identification, and staff have been selected.
“The Ministry of Interior has made a proposal to the government and requested the removal of some officials [from their positions] and Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has already approved our proposal,” he said.
Mr. Chantharith said that Lieutenant General Sok Phal, the deputy chief of the National Police, will be director-general of the general department of migration.
Lieutenant General Mao Chandara, another deputy chief of the National Police, will be appointed director-general of the general department of identification.
Lieutenant General Chhay Sinarith, chief of the internal security department in the Interior Ministry, will replace Lt. Gen. Phal as deputy national police chief.
Elsewhere in the Interior Ministry, Lieutenant General Thorng Lim, who is currently chief of the central security department, will also be appointed as a deputy national police chief, replacing You Sunlong, who is retiring.
“The Interior Ministry is preparing to celebrate the handing-over ceremony of the positions for the high-ranking officials after the Khmer New Year, but we are still awaiting a sub-decree from the King,” Lt. Gen. Chantharith said.
