Daphne Bramham: Our pandemic plight pales compared to millions of others

The global pandemic hasn’t halted slavery and human trafficking. If anything, it’s only made it worse especially for the forced labourers at sea and those secreted away in brothels.

He was only 17 when he snuck across the border from Cambodia into Thailand, where he’d been told there were plenty of jobs to be had.

He didn’t get far before a man with a van offered him a job on a fishing boat, promising $700 a month and shore leave, plus he’d be able to call home.

For a poor boy from a small village, it sounded perfect. It was also too good to be true.
