Dangrek Mountains Bus Crash Death Toll Rises to 17

The death toll from the bus that crashed in the Dangrek Mountains in Oddar Meanchey province last week rose to 17 on Friday, after one of the initial survivors died at the Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital, an official said Sunday.

Sixteen of the 39 people who were on a trip to Preah Vihear province were killed instantly and the remaining 23 seriously injured when the bus careened off the road and rolled down a hillside on Thursday.

All of the passengers were from Prey Sar commune in Phnom Penh’s Dangkao district, and commune chief Khat Sokai said Sunday that one of those hospitalized, a 61-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries on Friday evening.

“Her body was sent back to Phnom Penh immediately,” he said. “Now the death toll is 17.”

Mr. Sokai said he did not know the name of the woman. Pen Phalkun, director of the Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital, confirmed the death—also saying that he did not know the woman’s name—and added that all but one of the 22 survivors had left his hospital.

“Only the driver is still in the Siem Reap hospital,” he said. “As for the others, some have gone to Thailand, and some to Phnom Penh.”
