One man was killed and two were seriously injured in Kandal province on Tuesday night after a fight broke out during a Khmer New Year party at a local pagoda, police and local officials said.
The fight in Khsach Kandal district’s Koh Choram commune began when one man became angry that another man had stepped on his foot, according to commune chief Hok An.
Mr. An said authorities have not yet determined the identity of the suspect, who was not a resident of the commune but is believed to be in his mid-20s. He allegedly shot Chorn Sros, 28, twice in the chest with a K59 handgun after the victim stepped on his foot while dancing.
Another victim, Sambath Bora, 26, was shot in the stomach, while Run Ratha, 28, was struck twice on the head with the gun before the suspect fled the scene, according to commune police chief Leng Srun.
“The suspect used the handgun known as a K59 to shot the victims when he accused them of stepping on his foot while dancing,” Mr. Srun said.
Both Mr. Bora and Mr. Ratha are being treated at a hospital in Phnom Penh.
