CTN Scours Provinces for New Beauty Queen

Cambodia has never competed in the Miss World or Miss Universe beauty contests and the last Miss Cambodia contest was in 1994.

But this year, for the first time, a contest is scouring the provinces for the most beautiful Khmers.

“We decided to raise this project because we noticed no such contest has been organized in the provinces,” Mam Raksmey, senior producer of Cambodian Television Network’s Super Boys and Girls 2005, said Sunday.

He said that in the past 10 years, private companies have run beauty contests in Phnom Penh, but CTN is the first to go to the provinces.

Mam Raksmey said that this year’s contest, which will culminate in an awards show on Oct 1, is working in 11 provinces and cities to find good-looking men and women.

Siem Reap province selected three men and women on April 14, while contest officials have been working in Banteay Meanchey province for the last week. The other provinces and municipalities covered are Kandal, Kompong Cham, Kompong Chhnang, Kompong Thom, Phnom Penh, Prey Veng, Pursat, Sihanoukville and Svay Rieng.

Participants must be between 16 and 22 years old, and women must be at least 1.6 meters tall while men must be 1.7 meters, Mam Raksmey said.

Som Sokun, director of the movie department at the Ministry of Culture, said that there has never been a Miss Cambodia in the Miss World or Miss Universe contests.

“We hope that a Miss Cambodia someday could compete,” he said.

Mam Raksmey said that if CTN were to try to restart Miss Cambodia, it would need the support of the Ministry of Culture, adding that such a contest would have to reach all 24 provinces and cities.
