Court Rejects Injunction Against Sonando’s Party

A court complaint lodged by the vice president of charismatic radio station owner Mam Sonando’s political party seeking its eventual dissolution has been thrown out of court.

Heang Rithy, one of two deputies to Mr. Sonando at his Beehive Social Democratic Party, which launched September 9, said the Phnom Penh Municipal Court had rejected his request for an injunction ending party activities while a corruption investigation into Mr. Sonando was undertaken.

“Judge Ly Sokleng decided to reject my complaint Tuesday evening,” said Mr. Rithy, who accuses Mr. Sonando of mishandling party funds.

“This court is a court of the CPP. I will appeal the decision.”

Judge Sokleng could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Sonando said he was considering filing a defamation suit.

“I welcome the court’s rejection of the complaint because I was never involved with any money.

Our party does not have any money. Of our 88 founders, no one put $1 in the party,” Mr. Sonando said.

“On December 12, we will hold a congress at our headquarters…to clean away those people who gave our party a bad image and reputation.”
