A national cooking contest designed to highlight unique Khmer dishes will be held from 3 to 10 pm Saturday at the Bassac Theater.
“It’s a chance for tourists to taste Khmer food,” said Chhuon Noury, deputy administrator of the National Culture Center in the Ministry of Culture. “These are foods we can export in the future.”
More than 30 contestants from 10 provinces will cook a variety of fish dishes and other regional specialties. Food will also be on sale.
A similar competition was held in 1997.
The Ministry of Finance budgeted $6,500 for the event. Three first-place winners will receive about $200, three second-place winners $150 and three third-place winners $100. There will be $50 prizes for other competitors.
