Construction Worker Badly Injured in Eight-Story Fall

A 21-year-old construction worker is recovering at Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital from a severe head injury and a broken hip after plummeting eight floors on Saturday while working at a construction site in Daun Penh district’s Phsar Thmei III commune.

Som Toeu, originally from Kompong Speu province, had been a construction worker for about four months before the accident, his brother-in-law Norn Sambo said Sunday at the hospital.

“Toeu was seriously injured on the right side of his head and his hip bone was broken,” Mr. Sambo said.

A construction worker outside the building site Sunday, who would not give his name because he feared he might lose his job for speaking to the media, said he did not know the name of the company behind the construction.

“[Mr. Toeu] was welding iron with another worker and then they fell down from the eighth floor,” the worker said of Saturday’s accident.

“One hit the ground while the other held onto a bar and landed on the seventh floor.”

The worker said that Mr. Toeu was not wearing any safety equipment at the time of the accident.
