CNRP Plans to Query General Over Promotions

The CNRP decided on Monday to push ahead with a plan to summon Defense Minister Tea Banh over the promotion of three members of the prime minister’s Bodyguard Unit who were convicted of beating two opposition lawmakers in October 2015.

Suth Vanna, 45, Chay Sarith and Mao Hoeun, both 34, were released in November after serving less than a year in prison for the vicious assault of CNRP lawmakers Nhay Chamroeun and Kong Saphea.

Prime Minister Hun Sen promoted Mr. Vanna and Mr. Hoeun from lieutenant colonel to colonel about two weeks later, while Mr. Sarith was promoted to brigadier general.

CNRP lawmaker Son Chhay said the party decided on Monday to summon General Banh before the anti-corruption commission, which is chaired by opposition lawmaker Ho Vann.

“We need an official clarification from the minister of the National Defense Ministry about the reason for promoting their ranks,” he said, referring specific questions to Mr. Vann, who said he was unsure when the plan would proceed.

Gen.Banh could not be reached on Monday.
