CNRP Approves Action Plan, Sets Date for Congress

The opposition CNRP’s permanent committee met on Wednesday at the party’s headquarters in Phnom Penh to outline its action plan ahead of the forthcoming commune elections in 2017 and national elections in 2018, according to a post on deputy opposition leader Kem Sokha’s Facebook page.

“The party’s permanent committee and board of directors held a meeting to discuss and approve the preparation and targets for ‘Walking toward the election for change,’” the post said.

Mr. Sokha is currently the acting president of the CNRP, with opposition leader Sam Rainsy living in self-imposed exile to avoid a two-year prison sentence for defaming Foreign Minister Hor Namhong.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the CNRP added that party leaders had set the date for its National Council Congress meeting, to be held on March 26.

“We also approved the internal rule of CNRP lawmakers, the preparation for the party’s board of directors’ expert commissions, and the strategic outline and actions for 2016,” the statement said.

Members of the permanent committee, including party spokesman Yim Sovann, declined to elaborate on the statement.
