CMAC Gets Cautious OK

International donors continue to give cautious approval to the Cambodian Mine Action Center’s reform efforts that began last year after evidence of severe financial mismanagement surfaced.

At a meeting Monday with CMAC Director General Khem Sophoan, representatives from at least two donor countries—Sweden and Australia—said money for the financially troubled agency was likely.

“We will continue to look at further funding but only for six months rather than the 12 months,” said Australian representative Bill Costello. “It is the early stage of the reform process, and we’ll make a recommendation on long-term assistance after seeing more UNDP reports.”
