Claims of Shots Fired, Detentions During CNRP Rally

Several shots were allegedly fired inside a luxury residence in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district late Friday night after three youth supporters of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) were allegedly detained inside the house following an altercation as CNRP election campaigners passed the villa.

There were no reports of injuries.

Several hundred CNRP supporters gathered outside the large gates of the villa to demand the release of the three. At the time of printing, it was not known if the people allegedly detained inside the house had been released.

“They dragged…our [supporters] inside,” said Kong Vong, deputy youth leader for the CNRP in Phnom Penh. When an unidentified man fled the villa through the back entrance, hundreds of CNRP youth chased him down the street. Police arrested the man, but did not say why.

Chamkar Mon district police chief Ouch Sokhon, who was outside the villa, declined to comment other than to say that police had been deployed to protect the villa.
