Civil Party Tells of Seeing Leaders at KR Worksite

A civil party at the Khmer Rouge tribunal was questioned Thursday on her alleged sighting of Khmer Rouge leaders Pol Pot, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan at her worksite in Tram Kak district in 1977.

Oung Saroeun said she witnessed the three leaders accompany local cadre during a visit to Leay Bor commune, but only learned of their identities after being informed by her unit chief.

“The unit chief told me that Angkar [was] to visit and, two days after, they did come, and the person I recognized clearly was Ta Mok, Ta San and Ta Nouv [who] was the former Leay Bor commune chief,” said Ms. Saroeun, adding that she was told later that the rest of the group included Pol Pot, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan.

Under questioning from Anta Guisse, a lawyer for Khieu Samphan, Ms. Saroeun admitted she only added information about the sighting to her civil party application about two weeks ago following a discussion with her neighbor, who testified in January.

Proceedings continue Monday with testimony from American journalist Richard Dudman.
