Phnom Penh officials on Monday met with representatives of Shukaku Inc., the private firm developing the city’s Boeng Kak neighborhood, to try and settle the cases of the few dozen families still holding out for land titles.
Shukaku, which is owned by CPP Senator Lao Meng Khin, evicted some 3,000 families from the neighborhood before Prime Minister Hun Sen intervened in 2011 to let the remaining 600-odd families keep their homes and secure land titles.
Monday’s meeting focused on the few dozen families still living in Boeng Kak who have yet to get titles.
“We are speeding up work to solve the issue,” Phnom Penh Governor Pa Socheatvong said Wednesday.
City Hall spokesman Long Dimanche said officials at the meeting, including the senator’s wife, Choeung Sopheap, discussed future development of the area.
“We also discussed how to more quickly resolve the issue with the rest of the Boeng Kak residents,” he said.
The meeting followed the World Bank’s announcement last month that it was considering lifting a freeze on new lending to Cambodia it imposed in 2011 in protest over the Boeng Kak evictions.
