A Chinese man was killed and another was injured in an explosion at a quarry in Kratie province on Friday afternoon, according to a district police chief.
Chau Jinglean, 40, was killed, and his co-worker, Chhin Jifang, 40, sustained minor injuries to both his legs after a botched attempt to use gunpowder to extract stone from a quarry in Snuol district, according to district police chief Chan Sokkim.
“According to an employee there, the incident might have been caused by wrongly using explosives technology,” Mr. Sokkim said, adding that the quarry is owned by Moeung Sok Co. Ltd.
“The victims poured gunpowder into a hole they had made in the stone and put an iron or wooden tool on the powder, resulting in the explosion,” he added. The two victims were thrown back about six meters by the explosion, said Mr. Sokkim.
The pair were later sent to the Kompong Cham provincial hospital, where Chau Jinglean died from injuries sustained to his chest and legs, Mr. Sokkim said.
Mr. Jifang was released from the hospital and is still recovering, he added.
