Chinese Man Dies as Boat Sinks off Koh Kong

A Chinese man died and eight men were rescued Sunday after their longboat sank in a storm off the coast of Peam Krasorb commune in Koh Kong province’s Mondol Seima district, police said.

The deceased man, Guo Baoxing, 41, worked for a sand-dredging company in Koh Kong, said provincial police chief Hom Khitvien.

“The longboat sank when it faced a strong storm,” he said. Six Chinese and three Cambodian men were onboard the boat, which was returning to Dang Tong commune from a market in Khemara Phoumint City when it sank after being overcome by high waves, the official said.

Navy Police found Mr. Guo’s body floating in the sea, but were able to rescue the other eight men, who survived by clinging to debris for about three hours, Mr. Khitvien said.

The six Chinese nationals all worked on a vessel transporting sand from Koh Kong province to Singapore.

Police were unable to identify the dredging company.

Mr. Guo’s body was eventually transferred to the custody of his employer. The rescued men were sent to the provincial hospital, Mr. Khitvien said.
