China, Cambodia Further Cement Relations

Prime Minister Hun Sen met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 60th Asian-African Conference Commemoration in Bandung, Indonesia, on Thursday, announcing further cooperation between the two countries, local media reported Friday.

Mr. Xi was quoted as saying that China will import 100,000 tons of rice from Cambodia, and that a Chinese naval vessel is to visit Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in the future, state-run National Television of Kampuchea (TVK) reported.

In the past two decades, China has positioned itself as Cambodia’s biggest trade partner, and at a regional summit held in Beijing in November, it offered at least $500 million worth of grants and loans to assist Cambodia’s development every year.

Contacted Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said that details of the agreements would be released when the Cambodian delegation returns from the 26th Asean Summit, which begins in Malaysia on Sunday.
