Checkpoints Used to Watch For Illegal Fishing

Four checkpoints have been established to crack down on illegal fishing on Cambodia’s waters by Thai and Vietnamese commercial vessels.

Fishermen have complained of increasing encroachment by the foreign boats.

The checkpoints, manned by police and officials from the Ministry of Parliamentary Relations and Inspection, were set up off Sihanoukville, Koh Kong, Kep and Koh Tang April 23.They will search both foreign and domestic vessels.

Boats stopped will be required to produce Cambodian fishing licenses.

However, he admitted that some boat operators may have forged documents.

Khun Hang said while the checkpoints will contribute to the reduction of illegal fishing, “accomplished” Cambodian officials may be behind some of the illegal operations. “It will be easy to crack down once we know who is behind it,” he said.
