Charges Laid in Murder of Suspected Sorcerer

The Oddar Meanchey Provincial Court on Monday charged three people in connection with the murder of a traditional healer on Thursday, police said.

Deputy provincial police chief Loek Sokha said that Investigating Judge Sin Vichet charged Samban Buth, 27, with the premeditated murder of Rem Yoeung, 60, while Mr. Buth’s mother-in-law, Huot Samnang, 47, was charged as an accomplice to murder and her son Yean Douch, 25, with threatening to commit murder.

“The investigating judge charged them at about 2 p.m. today,” he said.

“We have already sent them to pretrial detention at the provincial prison.”

“The only reason they committed the murder is because the suspect’s family wanted revenge against the victim and her husband, ” Mr. Sokha added, explaining that the family believed the couple used black magic to make Ms. Samnang sick.

Rem Yoeung was found with her throat slit outside her house in Chongkal district’s Pongro commune on Friday afternoon.

Police arrested Mr. Buth that night and and the other two suspects on Saturday.
