Cashew Worker Arrested Over Rape of Girl, 11

A man was arrested and sent to Kompong Cham provincial police headquarters Monday after he allegedly raped an 11-year-old girl at a cashew plantation in Choeung Prey district, according to police.

Choeuy Mab, 28, was arrested Sunday evening after attacking two girls, aged 11 and 12, who had been searching for wood that morning in the plantation where he worked, said district police chief Prak Sokun.

Mr. Sokun said the man raped the 11-year-old, but that the older girl managed to escape and ran to tell authorities.

“The [younger] girl was taken to the hospital for treatment and brought back home on Sunday,” he said, adding that the man and two girls each lived in different communities in neighboring Batheay district.

Heng Vuthy, deputy Kompong Cham provincial police chief, said he was not aware of the details of the case, but that Mr. Mab would most likely be sent to provincial court today and charged with rape with aggravated circumstances.
