Late-night revelers plowed into the Thai Embassy early Saturday morning while driving a political campaign vehicle on Monivong Boulevard, the chief of municipal traffic police confirmed Sunday.
Two men in the vehicle had been drinking heavily before colliding with the embassy’s wall at 3 am, El Somneang said Sunday.
“The drivers were so drunk and lost control of their vehicle along Monivong Boulevard,” he said.
The men had crossed the Japanese Bridge in a truck that they had been hired to drive for the Neang Neak Women’s Party, according to the Khmer-language Rasmei Kampuchea newspaper.
Though the two were treated across the street at Calmette Hospital, they sustained only minor injuries. The embassy fence and the truck, however, were badly damaged, according to a Thai Embassy official and transport police.
“There is no problem,“ the embassy official said. “We’ve only asked them to pay for the damage.”
