Motorcross enthusiasts will see Cambodian racers competing with professional motorcyclists from overseas at this year’s Mild Seven Cambodia Supercross ’98, race officials said Thursday.
Four Cambodians have taken a five-month intensive training course in order to participate in the international race. Pierre Catry, a French motorcross racer who has lived in Cambodia for years, coached the four on technical skills needed to handle a motorcycle on rough ground.
“We are not very good competitors yet, but we will join the race to gain good experience…” said Chove Chiodi, 27.
This year, 23 riders from Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, the US and other nations have signed up for the race. Included are Paul Lindsey of the US, champion of the 1997 event, and coach Catry.
“This year’s game will be more interesting than last year’s because I will join it,” Catry said. “I have trained a lot this year. I could win.”
The contest, sponsored by Japan Tobacco International and Total, is to start 2 pm both Saturday and Sunday.
