Cambodia slams US sanction against senior minister, tycoon

The Cambodian government has slammed the United States government’s decision to impose sanctions on a businessman and a senior government official under its Global Magnitsky Act.

Its Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed its dismay over the US move, saying the sanctions against the official and the well-known tycoon accused of corruption and illegal logging, could undermine efforts to mend ties between the two nations.

The US Treasury Department on Monday imposed sanctions against Senior Minister Kun Kim, former chief of joint staff of the Cambodian armed forces and currently first vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, over his role in a real estate development project in Koh Kong province.
