Caltex stations remained closed Monday after company officials failed to issue a letter of agreement saying they would pay a one-time bonus of $20 to temporarily end a strike, a workers’ representative said.
“We have not returned to work yet because the Caltex company failed to issue an official letter outlining what was agreed upon on Friday,” said Chhuon Sophoan Nara.
“The company representative claimed that the regional office had not approved the agreement, but I think the company is not willing to resolve the problem.”
On Friday, Caltex company officials agreed to pay workers a one-off $20 while a two-month survey is conducted to assess salaries, according to Sar Mora, the leader of the Cambodian Food and Service Workers’ Federation.
Since May 12, about 300 workers have been on strike, demanding a monthly wage increase from $110 to $160.
A Caltex spokesman said that the company will meet at 2 p.m. today with a Labor Ministry representative as well as workers. Workers said the strike will continue if an agreement is not reached.
