Businessman Charged With Fraud Over Bad Checks

A local businessman was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Chamkar Mon district on Friday for allegedly issuing two fraudulent checks to a Royal Cambodian Armed Forces officer, military police and court officials said Sunday.

The businessman, Pin Pitou, the chairman of a local company called BOS, was arrested by military police after he borrowed $100,000 from the officer and repaid him with the bad checks, according to military police spokesman Kheng Tito. Mr. Tito said he did not know the identity of the victim.

“We acted on a court order to take Mr. Pitou to court and we do not know details about his position or company,” he added.

According to an online job posting, BOS distributes noodles, chili sauce and fish sauce in the country.

Municipal deputy prosecutor Hieng Sopheak said the court had summoned Mr. Pitou for questioning after receiving a complaint from the victim of the fraud, whom he identified as Tham Vanna.

“Mr. Vanna accused Mr. Pitou of issuing two paper checks without the cash,” he explained.

He identified the victim only as an “officer at the Ministry of Defense,” declining to give further details.
